Overview

Jiaxing, a historical city in Zhejiang, is known for its water towns (Wuzhen, Xitang), Nanhu Lake, and the Communist Party's founding site.

Brief Guide

Jiaxing, one of the birthplaces of the Communist Party of China, is famous for Nanhu Lake. The landscape here is elegant and beautiful, and many renowned people have gathered here over the years. It is a famous historical and cultural city that displays the patchwork of waterways typical of the Jiangnan region. Since ancient times, Jiaxing has produced many great personages, including Shen Junru, Wang Guowei, Mao Dun, and Xu Zhimo, all cultural figures who enjoy great prestige in Chinese history. In Jiaxing, you can watch the world-famous Haining tides at the Qiantang River, enjoy the scenic area of Nanhu Lake, or slowly stroll through the ancient towns to get a sense of the unique charm of the southern Chinese waterways.

Getting There & Around

Connected via railway and nearby Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport (90 km). Intercity buses to Jiaxing Coach Center. Tram system opened 2021.

How to Get There

Jiaxing's transportation network is well-connected, primarily through its railway stations and nearby airports.

  • Hangzhou Xiaoshan (HGH): 90 km away. Intercity buses go directly to Jiaxing Coach Center or Jiaxing North Coach Station, taking about 1 hour 50 minutes.
  • Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA): 92 km away. Take the subway to Hongqiao Railway Station and then a high-speed train to Jiaxing South Railway Station.

Jiaxing Railway Station, in the city center, has been renovated and expanded, now with three platforms and six tracks, handling up to 2,300 passengers per hour at peak times. The new design integrates the station with the surrounding environment, creating a "train station in the forest." Its central location makes it easy to reach the city center.

Local Transportation

Jiaxing offers various local transportation options. The tramway system's first section opened in June 2021, connecting the Southern High Speed Railway Station to the Fanggong Road/Binhe Road Train Station. This 10.6 km route with 11 stops is part of a planned 7-route network. Trams run every 10 minutes during most of the day and were initially free to encourage ridership.

  • Shared bicycles: Shared bicycles are also popular, including traditional bikes and electric bikes, accessible via a smartphone app.
  • Car rental: Car rental services are available, but manual transmission cars are more common, and gas prices can affect costs.
